-er and -ir verbs continued:
nosotros and vosotros forms

On the previous page, we saw the present tense of -er and -ir verbs except for the nosotros/-as and vosotros/-as forms. The endings for these latter forms depend on whether the verb is an -er or -ir verb. They are sometimes called "stressed" endings, because the stressed syllable always lies on the ending of these forms.

Spain vs Latin America

Recall that vosotros (and its feminine vosotras) is essentially only used in Spain, and refers to more than one person on informal terms.

In Latin America, ustedes (with the verb form ending in -en for -er and -ir verbs) is used to refer to more than one person, on either familiar or formal terms.

1. In a few cases, the -ir is spelled with an accent (e.g. freír).
